Ahhhhh underground rap....

So I hit he Jedi Show last night at the Opera House with my man Euan from Corrupted Nostalgia (http://www.myspace.com/corruptednostalgia) and I have to say I was suprised.

As with many if not all REMG shows recently, there was zero promotion. Now, this could have been due to the fact it was an all ages jam, and REMG could be buying ads in High-School bathrooms or on people binders, but I don't think so. So, given that I never once saw a flyer or poster or event listing for the jam, and that eben on JMT's website it was listed as "Toronto - TBA", it was pretty packed. I'd say 700-800 kids easy.

E. Riggadale, Myself and our crew arrived at around 9:00PM, as it was an early show. Missed outerspace, but no big deal, because they suck ass. Really, the most generic, boring underground you can muster is still better than this snore-fest.

DJ Link held it down before R.A.'s set with some nice Mid 90's jams, but I had the feeling most kids there would be a little too young to remember those joints. I saw a lot of NECRO T-Shirts. Wink

After some courtesy smokage in the owners box, we ventured back down for R.A. the Rugged man who stole the night. He dropped classics like "Every Record Label Sucks Dick" and "Stanley Kubrick" wityh material off his last "Die Rugged Man Die" album. He was funny, he got the crowd hype and, most importantly, he rapped his ass off. Some funny on-stage comedy at the expense of DJ Link carried his set, which he delivered half acapella, half on beat. And there were mosh pits. Many. Crazy. I feel bad for the pretty little 18 year old he molested on stage but really, it's a rugged man show, what'd you expect girl? No one forced you to get up there!

Then the egg-shaped pharoahe himself , Vinnie Paz appeared with DJ Question (who killed it, watch out) and the crowd went nuts. Now, that's not to say the rapping was great, because it wasn't. It was not nearly half the level of balls-out insanity the first jedi Show was two years ago @ El Macambo. But he held it down with many a rap about Ancient Scrolls, The matrix, swords and of course, killing gay people. If you have'nt heard the new jedi Mind Tricks album, that's a big theme. Vinnie does not like the gays. Not at all. All tracks with guest appearance were cut to have Vinnie, sometimes the guy from Outerspace, and oh yes, lots of shouting.

But after a few more mosh-pits and some poor heat-bag kiddies getting pinched by security for blazing inside (hello? THEY CAN SEE YOUR SMOKE YOU IDIOTS) they dropped Heavenly Divine, and the lights came on and that was that. But not until the most akward attempt to get girls on stage ever (nothing like a bunch of 15 year olds from Oakville trying to grind to Jedi Mind!).

All in all, R.A. deserves maaaad props for straling the show single handedly with no hype man, something jedi couldn;t do with two hype men and a DJ. I guess this one was for the kids. Smile

Outerspace: (1/5) - Didn't see em, but thir album sucks ass.

R.A. The Rugged Man : (4.5/5) - A circus right before your very eyes.

Jedi Mind Tricks : (2.5/5) - 1 Extra point for DJ Question, who is crazy dope.

I was at one of their shows in Philly and Outerspace performed...same with Cheif Kamachi and Necro...I thought it was one of the best shows ever.

But then again I love anyone from BabyGrande and Psychological Records and I know all their songs off by heart...including from the new Torture Papers EP and the Servents in Heaven, Kings in Hell LP...

I wanted to go to this one but I had surgery a few days ago so I can't walk. But I would've love to have been there.

I love that generic "fuck you up" underground...no matter how 'unlyrical' people think it is. I still jam to this shit in the car.

I never said they weren't lyrical dawg, just that the whole scimitars and ancient scrolls thing is over played in the underground.

Please, rappers, leave the lines about the matrix alone! IT'S BEEN DONE!

I thought they were good man, but not AS good as their last appearance, which I still consider one of the best shows I'd ever seen.

R.A. fuckin DESTROYED it and Jedi just didn't have the fire to top his one man spectacle.
