PARTISAN DEFENSE COMMITTEE
P.O. Box 314, Station B, Toronto, Ontario M5T 2W1, 416-593-4138, pdctoronto@bellnet.ca, www.partisandefense.org

Declaring “We demand the immediate freedom of Mumia Abu-Jamal, an innocent man,” Toronto’s over 8,000-strong Amalgamated Transit Union Local 113 has joined with millions around the world -- workers, students, death penalty abolitionists, fighters for black rights and immigrant rights, socialists -- who have taken up the fight to free Mumia Abu-Jamal now.

As the powerful Congress of South African Trade Unions wrote in the March 2007 issue of Shopsteward: “Mumia’s freedom will not be won through relying on the capitalist rigged justice system. What can really turn the tide is the power of united millions across the world -- working people united in struggle to free an innocent man.”

Indicating the potential for mass, labour-centered protests, hundreds of trade unionists -- including now ATU Local 113 -- and prominent individuals internationally have signed the PDC-initiated statement “We demand the immediate freedom of Mumia Abu-Jamal, an innocent man” (read the full text and list of signatories at www.partisandefense.org/campaigns/signers.html).

A decision by the Third Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia could come at any time. Now is the time to redouble our efforts to build an emergency protest if the court rules to uphold the death sentence or denies Mumia’s appeals for a new trial or hearing. The day after a decision, rally in Toronto across the street from the U.S. Consulate, 360 University Ave., at 6:00 p.m. if on a weekday, or at 1:00 p.m. if on a weekend: Mumia Abu-Jamal is an innocent man! Free Mumia now! Abolish the racist death penalty!

Save the date: Friday, December 14, from 7 to 10 p.m., Annual Holiday Appeal for Class-War Prisoners, Steelworkers Hall, 25 Cecil Street, Toronto. Sponsored by and tickets available from the Partisan Defense Committee.
